New York Magazine called Bang on a Can “relentlessly inventive.” Vanity Fair described the new music ensemble as “a free-wheeling parade of the strange, the raucous, and the beautiful.” Bang on a Can is celebrating its 25th-anniversary season with performances around the world from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. The group also is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its electric chamber ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars.

Formed in 1987 by composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, Bang on a Can is dedicated to commissioning, performing, creating, and recording contemporary music. With an ear for the new, the unknown, and the unconventional, the ensemble strives to expose new audiences worldwide to exciting and innovative music.

MIT will host the Bang on a Can All-Stars from October 2011 through April 2012 in monthly visits to the MIT campus for a wide range of artistic, educational, and performance activities. The residency includes two landmark concerts at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium.

Bang on a Can’s residency is made possible by the Arts at MIT Visiting Artist Program in collaboration with Professor Evan Ziporyn and MIT’s Department of Music and Theater Arts.
