Banerjee bonanza

IN Spring 2020, Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee will host sharp-witted artist Sarnath Banerjee at MIT, America’s most hallowed academic ground, for a lecture on the economics of water. Sarnath, whose works create a strong sense of place and atmosphere, says the 18th and 19th centuries were the golden age of public lectures where one witnessed talks by Charles Darwin, Luigi Galvani, JC Bose, Alexander Humboldt, and Sir Jadunath Sarkar. “These lectures were then delivered with great theatrical flourish to packed theatres. They created what might be called an informed civil body. Knowledge wasn’t just outraged WhatsApp groups hurling opinions as we see today,” he says from Berlin where he lives. “Banerjee and Banerjee want to take this old form and use imagination, humour and theatre to create a new language for public discourse,” he adds.

A swinging time

AT the seventh edition of a golf tournament at the plush Willingdon Sports Club, Asian Games gold medallist and ace golfer Amit Luthra has got some of his friends from other sports to join him. Next week, Kapil Dev, Mahela Jayawardene, Leander Paes and Ajit Agarkar will swing the club to raise funds for Luthra’s foundation that empowers underprivileged golfers. Pitching in with a performance will be singer Raghav Sachar. “By the grace of God and thanks to wonderful like-minded golfing buddies, a humble effort has now become a successful project,” Luthra says.

Goan treasure

EVEN though few may have heard of the talented chef Sandeep Sreedharan, several visitors to Goa have eaten at his coastal food specialty restaurant Mahe. Named after the country’s smallest and picturesque district in Puducherry, the restaurant was earlier a Portuguese house in Anjuna. Sreedharan brought his childhood culinary experiences to this swanky eating house and made it a hot favourite of star visitors like Kriti Sanon, Amrita Arora and Ashish Nehra. Sreedharan is hosting a pop-up tomorrow at a private members’ club in Lower Parel, bringing with him some excellent seafood from Mahe.

Tailpiece

THIS superstar’s girlfriend has literally become a part of his clan and has started making appearances at parties without him. She tags along with his relatives and stays buried in her phone through the evening. Given the leading actor’s multiple commitments, this arrangement seemed to be the best option. Until recently, that is. We hear the actor’s sister has expressed reluctance to put up with the big brother’s PYT. So much so, that at a recent birthday party, the two ladies occupied separate corners right until it was time to leave. And we thought the mother would be tough to crack.
