MIT’s List receives $200,000 gift

The MIT List Visual Arts Center has received a gift of $200,000 from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in support of Joan Jonas’s presentation for the US Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. Interestingly, in 1966, Helen Frankenthaler represented the United States at the 33d Venice Biennale (along with Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jules Olitski.) In a statement, Paul Ha, director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center and commissioner and co-curator of the US Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, said he is grateful for the contribution: “On behalf of the List, Joan Jonas, and everyone involved in this project, I extend our great appreciation to the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation for its incredible generosity and support.” For the five galleries of the US Pavilion, Jonas will conceive a new multimedia installation incorporating video, drawings, objects, and sound. It will be on view from May 9 through Nov. 22.
