FA21 Tuesday Intro to Oil Painting

Day/Time: 10 Tuesdays starting September 21, 4:30-7:00pm

There is no class November 23.

Students will work with individual subjects such as Still Life, Patterns, landscape, simple portraiture and abstraction. Each class with begin with a Powerpoint of reference material to introduce a wide variety of painters.

Note: We will go over the other materials (listed below) in the first class together! If you are taking class with a friend, or a few friends, you can share your paints. You can also pair-up with someone the first day, if you like.  

  • Walnut oil (NO TURPENTINE OR SOLVENTS)
  • Glass container with lid for oil (small glass jar or something of this nature)
  • Brushes (a few different shapes and sizes, this is personal preference) 
  • Palette box with palette and knife
  • Paint: with these colors you will be able to mix just about anything! Alizarine Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ocher, Cadmium Red, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine, Titanium White (large tube), and Magenta. 
  • Two canvases, either pre-stretched canvas or wood panels
  • Plastic gloves
  • Graphite pencil
  • After the canvas stretching demonstration, if desired please purchase: one yard of unprimed cotton canvas (7 or 10 oz.) and four stretcher bars (two 14″ long and two 12″, medium duty).
All supplies can be purchased at Dick Blick and Artists or Craftsman Art Supply located in Central Square (619 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge), about a half-mile north of the SAA.
