This course introduces students to experimental and alternative methods in drawing and painting and thinking about the expanded definitions of both modes of working. Experimenting within an interdisciplinary format, students will be exposed to a plethora of artists who blend the boundaries between drawing and painting with those of photography, sculpture, textile art, and other materials, and will also be introduced to preparatory techniques such as mounting paper and stretching canvases. Students will respond to two prompts before spending the rest of their time diving into a self-guided project. Because of the advanced nature of this class, students should possess an intermediate level of skill in either drawing or painting, and it is strongly recommended that they have taken Introduction to Drawing/Intermediate Oil Painting prior to joining as we will not be covering any foundational skills in either medium. This course is open to all mediums in drawing and painting, including pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, and acrylic and oil paints.

Materials: Because of the breadth of diverse materials and mediums that students may choose to engage with for this class, there is no materials fee for this course; students are expected to purchase for class all materials they may need for their projects. Basic consumables (such as Newsprint, pencils, etc.) will be offered.

Tuition and Fees:

MIT Undergraduate + Graduate Students $160 | MIT Faculty, Staff, Spouses, Alumni $310
