This course does not have regular class meetings and is for students who have prior experience developing with photography. Students may take this course more than once. Students must either have taken a darkroom or digital course with the MIT Arts Studios, or have obtained instructor permission to enroll. Please contact the instructor if you are unsure whether you have the prerequisite experience for the course.

Students will work independently to produce prints through the course of the term, participating in one introductory session and two scheduled critiques to refine their technique and personal vision. Two critiques will be held over the course of the term. Students may enter the class seeking to refine an existing project, begin a new one, or simply explore ways of image-making through prompt-based assignments.

Students may work digitally or using B/W darkroom processes. Students working in the darkroom must have completed a darkroom course and be able to develop and print independently.

Particular technologies, processes, strategies, and techniques may be covered in supplemental meetings based on student interest. Potential topics that might be covered include, for example, the use of medium- and large-format cameras; sheet film development; pushing/pulling film; the use of view camera movements; split-grade printing; and advanced Photoshop techniques. (All supplemental meetings are optional.)

120 and 4×5 format cameras will be available for check-out to students on a weekly check-out basis. Digital and 35mm cameras may be available only if they are not checked out to the introductory classes. Students must provide their own film and paper. Darkroom chemistry is provided.
