Day/Time: Sunday, November 15, 1:00–3:00pm
Location: W20 Art Studios, W20-425
Instructor: Sayako Hiroi

Kintsugi is the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics so that the break becomes part of the object’s story rather than something to hide. In this beginner-friendly workshop, students will look at the history and philosophy behind kintsugi, then proceed to reassemble a broken ceramic piece, gluing the fragments and filling small gaps and chips. After the adhesive has cured, students smooth and refine the repaired lines and finish them with gold-colored powder, revealing the golden seams kintsugi is known for.
Each student will complete one repaired piece to take home. Students may bring their own broken cup, bowl, or plate (palm-sized, broken into two to four pieces), or use a piece provided in class. All materials and tools are included. Along the way, we will also talk about how traditional urushi lacquer repair differs from the modern method, and why repair, care, and imperfection matter in a culture of replacement.
No experience is needed. Finished pieces are decorative and not food safe.
