The perception of color is not a fixed mode of seeing but rather psychological and relative. Understanding the implications of color selection, mixing, and placement allows one to harness the emotional qualities of color.
This introductory course provides students with a guide to using colors intentionally. Using gouache, students will explore the properties of color including temperatures, biases, relationship dynamics, hierarchies, and schemes. Emphasis will be placed on preparatory processes for laying out a color scheme for a painting, including making swatches and mixing out a palette, and the practical aspects of using color.
Students should have familiarity with basic drawing techniques to benefit from this course. Please note that this class will be using gouache as the primary medium. Experience using watercolors and gouache is helpful, but not required
Materials: Strathmore watercolor pad (12 sheets, ~12” x 18”), an acrylic palette (~9″ x 12″), and a sufficient variety of different brushes. Please check materials list for information on types of brushes. Students should bring all materials to the first class.
*Materials fee covers the cost of consumables such as paint, cleaning agents, oils, and rags.
