Learn the basics of metalsmithing as you make your own small metal sculptures, toys, or jewelry. In this 4-week course, we will explore fundamental techniques for cutting, forming, and joining metal using common, everyday tools.  In particular, we will focus on cold connections— methods for joining metal that do not require heat, so they can be done anywhere, without special equipment.

Students should bring at least one square foot (12”x12”) of 18-gauge metal sheet in copper, brass, nugold, or nickel silver to the first day of class.  This can be ordered from most jewelry and metal suppliers, including Rio Grande (www.riogrande.com) or Otto Frei (www.ottofrei.com), and should cost between $25 and $50 depending on the kind of metal.

This course meets four Fridays from 12:00-2:30pm in the START Studio (W20-429) and is taught by Justin Playl.
