This course provides an intensive introduction to the fundamentals and processes of representational drawing. Students will engage with, and explore, a plethora of drawing methodologies such as mark-making, layering, additive/subtractive drawing, and the articulation of line, shape, volume, weight, gesture, and composition. This class will use charcoal as the primary drawing material, and after guided technical exercises students will take their skills and apply it through the rendering of a complex still life.

MATERIALS:

A full set of drawings tools and supplies may be financially prohibitive for some students, particularly for the short amount of time that IAP provides us. As such, the SAA will purchase all drawing consumables such as paper and drawing tools. The course fee will include an additional $20 materials fee per student that covers these shared supplies. Students interested in purchasing drawing materials for their personal use can reach out to the instructor on the first day of class to receive a recommended materials list.
