IAP23 Painting Portraits

Day/Time: 4 Wednesdays starting January 11, 6:00-8:30pm

Location: SAA 2D Studio (W20-425)

Instructor: Timothy Lee

Self portrait of a MIT student.

This course provides an overview of the process of painting portraits, focusing on composition, color, values, and textures. Although the class will be grounded in representational painting, students will be given the flexibility to incorporate abstraction into their works to create a striking and dynamic image. Students will learn important skills in painting such as creating underpaintings, mixing warm/cool palettes, and glazing. Students will leave this course with a deeper understanding on the approaches to portrait painting and will finish a painting at the conclusion of our time together.

MATERIALS: Students will need to acquire the following materials before the first day of class

  • 18” x 24” canvas
  • 2H graphite pencil
  • Students should have a variety of different brushes suitable for rendering different textures
  • 3” wide flat Hake brush (often located in the ink section)
  • Rag cloths (old/throwaway cotton clothing is great for this purpose)

Materials can be purchased at Artist & Craftsman Supply and Blick Art, both in Central Square.

*** A full set of painting tools and supplies may be financially prohibitive for some students, particularly for the short amount of time that IAP provides us. As such, the SAA will purchase consumables such as oil paints and glazing oils, as well as palette paper and palette knives. The course fee will include an additional $30 materials fee per student that covers these shared supplies.
