This course provides an introduction to two photo-sensitive processes for capturing images without a camera: cyanotype printing and screenprinting. We will review the processes for preparing your surfaces with photoemulsion and photosensitive solutions, and explore best practices for exposing your surfaces to UV light. We will alternate between using natural sunlight and a UV bulb to compare differences in how the image forms. Students will leave the course with a deeper understanding of these two processes, and will have the opportunity to screenprint images of their choice onto a variety of different surfaces. We will only be covering single-color screenprints for this class.

MATERIALS: Students will need to acquire the following materials before the first day of class

  • 10” x 14” Screen printing frame (110 Mesh frame preferred)
  • Speedball Screen Printing Ink Jet Transparency Sheets
  • Jacquard Cyanotype Sensitizer set
  • 11” x 14” Strathmore 300 Series Printmaking Paper, 30 sheets
  • 5x sheets of Black construction paper (no smaller than 10” x 14” each – you may choose to paint regular sheets of paper with black acrylic paint as a substitute but paper must lay flat when dried)
  • Surfaces of your choice to print on (ex. Clothing or tote bags)

Materials can be purchased at Artist & Craftsman Supply and Blick Art, both in Central Square.

*** A full set of printing tools and supplies may be financially prohibitive for some students, particularly for the short amount of time that IAP provides us. As such, the SAA will purchase consumables such as photoemulsion solutions, squeegees, and printing ink. The course fee will include an additional $30 materials fee per student that covers these shared supplies.
