IAP25 Painting Portraits

Day/Time: 3 Thursdays starting January 16, 2:30-5:30 pm

Location: SAA 2D Studio (W20-425)

Instructor: Timothy Lee

Over three weeks, students will work on a painting within the genre of portraiture and will be taught the tools to express themselves through the medium of oil paint. This class is not intended to be an introduction to oil painting, and it is expected that students enter the class already familiar with the process of painting and working with oil paint as a medium. The first class will introduce concepts in color theory, color bias, color mixing and underpainting, and subsequent weeks will involve students painting a portrait of their choosing from reference photographs.

Self portrait of a MIT student.

Materials: Students are responsible for bringing to class a 16” x 20” or 18” x 24” canvas as well as a sufficient variety of brushes. All other materials will be provided by the Studio; Materials fee $25.
