This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of drawing. Students will explore a variety of drawing techniques including mark-making, layering, additive/subtractive drawing and explore the articulation of line, value, shape, volume, weight, gesture, and composition.

The first four weeks focus on small-scale observational studies to develop technical skills, which will be applied in the remainder of the class through larger, more complex drawings. Through exercises that are grounded in observation and realistic rendering, students will gain skills, confidence, and a critical eye for representing various subject matters and concepts.

*Students will need to purchase a Newsprint pad sized 18” x 24” or 19” x 24” with minimum 50 sheets. Materials fee covers the cost of all other consumables such as charcoal, eraser, Bristol paper, and other drawing tools. Materials can be purchased at Blick Art in Central Square or online.

Tuition and Fees:
MIT Undergraduate + Graduate Students $165 | MIT Faculty, Staff, Spouses, Alumni $315 | Materials Fee: $25
