This advanced course in drawing and painting will challenge students to become technically fluent in the processes and methodologies of their choice in drawing or painting, while they explore topics that they are personally interested in. Students will work independently in addressing their topics of interest while building upon their skills – formally, conceptually and stylistically. There will be an emphasis in narration, problem-solving, and working in series as students interpret class-wide prompts. Major topics covered will include an introduction to abstraction, scale, group critiques, and incorporating mixed-media practices into drawing or painting. The classes are designed to be collaborative; students will have the opportunity to learn from one another in a dynamic studio setting.

Because of the fast-paced nature of this class, students will be expected to have prior experience in drawing or painting, including familiarity with representational drawing (whether that was acquired through taking an introductory drawing or painting class, or from personal practice). Students concerned about whether or not this class would be a good fit for them should reach out to the instructor at timmylee@mit.edu before enrolling, with images of any works they have previously done.

Materials: Your choice of materials will depend on your interest in drawing or painting.  Use the links below to download basic materials lists. Please purchase your materials prior to the first class according to your needs (additional materials may be discussed with the instructor during class time).
