Take your clay skills to another level while we explore challenging techniques such as altering, stretching, and cutting. We’ll develop advanced rim treatments that command attention, refine feet and handle techniques, experiment with oozy slips, and investigate various surface decorating techniques. This course supports artists ready to push the boundaries of their practice and develop a body of work that reflects their unique creative vision.

Prerequisites: This is an intermediate to advanced level class. It is mandatory that you have taken beginner and intermediate level classes. Should you have questions about the appropriate class for you, please be in touch with the instructor.

Intermediate students should be able to consistently and independently demonstrate essential skills, including wedging clay effectively, centering on the potter’s wheel, throwing and trimming basic forms with confidence, rolling slabs unaided, and constructing simple forms using pinching, slab, or coil techniques. You should be able to apply glaze with familiarity and control and have a growing understanding of ceramic surface treatment.

Advanced students should possess the technical and creative ability to develop a cohesive body of work, be proficient in foundational techniques, and be ready to explore wheelthrowing methods, sculptural handbuilding techniques, and experimental approaches to form, function, and surface treatment.

Materials: Students must purchase their own 8 piece (minimum) pottery tool kit for class, available online and at Blick Art in Central Square.

*Materials fee helps cover the cost of clay, glazes, and firing.

Tuition and Fees: MIT Undergraduate & Graduate Students $160 | MIT Faculty, Staff, & Other Affiliates $300 | Materials Fee: $35
