Day/Time: 8 Tuesdays starting June 16, 10:00am–12:30pm
Location: W20 Ceramics Studio, W20-431
Instructor: Marc Mancuso

This course introduces you to the basics of wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing while building confidence with fundamental techniques. Whether you’re new to ceramics or have some familiarity with clay, you’ll learn to confidently create on the potter’s wheel, starting with bowls, cups, and mugs. Through instructor demonstrations and hands-on exploration, you’ll gradually take on new and more challenging forms.
Prerequisites: This class is open to beginner to intermediate students.
Beginner students have little to no prior experience in clay or need a refresher on basic techniques. Instructors assume no foundational knowledge and will introduce essential skills to get you started in ceramics.
Intermediate students should be able to consistently and independently demonstrate essential skills, including wedging clay effectively, centering on the potter’s wheel, throwing and trimming basic forms with confidence, rolling slabs unaided, and constructing simple forms using pinching, slab, or coil techniques. You should be able to apply glaze with familiarity and control and have a growing understanding of ceramic surface treatment.
Materials: Students must purchase their own 8 piece (minimum) pottery tool kit for class, available online and at Blick Art in Central Square.
*Materials fee helps cover the cost of clay, glazes, and firing.
Tuition and Fees: MIT Undergraduate & Graduate Students $130 | MIT Faculty, Staff, & Other Affiliates $250 | Materials Fee: $35
