This course is designed to help you improve your throwing and hand-building skills while taking on new and more challenging forms. Through instructor demonstrations and hands-on exploration, you’ll build confidence with specific techniques including lids, rims and feet, handles, spouts, and wheel-thrown utilitarian objects of different sizes and styles. A variety of glazing, slips, and surface decorating techniques will also be explored as you deepen your creative practice.

Prerequisites: Intermediate students should be able to consistently and independently demonstrate essential skills, including wedging clay effectively, centering on the potter’s wheel, throwing and trimming basic forms with confidence, rolling slabs unaided, and constructing simple forms using pinching, slab, or coil techniques. You should be able to apply glaze with familiarity and control and have a growing understanding of ceramic surface treatment.

Materials: Students must purchase their own 8 piece (minimum) pottery tool kit for class, available online and at Blick Art in Central Square.

*Materials fee helps cover the cost of clay, glazes, and firing.

Tuition and Fees: MIT Undergraduate & Graduate Students $130 | MIT Faculty, Staff, & Other Affiliates $250 | Materials Fee: $35
