This course is designed for photographers with extensive experience in either film or digital photography. Projects are largely self-guided and independent, allowing you to develop work that reflects your artistic vision and creative interests. The course includes two structured check-in sessions at the beginning and end of the session to discuss your project development and creative direction. Additional sessions can be scheduled based on group interests and needs, providing flexibility as your work evolves.

Prerequisites: This course is for intermediate and advanced students who have prior digital photography experience and/or darkroom experience developing film and making prints. It does not have regular class meetings. Students may take this course more than once.

Completion of a MIT W20 Art Studios digital or darkroom photography course or permission of the instructor is required, and completion of a MIT W20 Art Studios darkroom course is required for access to the darkroom. Please contact the instructor if you’re unsure whether you have the prerequisite experience.

Materials: 35mm, 120, and 4×5 format cameras will be available for check-out to students on a weekly check-out basis if they are not in use by an introductory class. Digital camera checkout may be possible, but availability is not guaranteed. Students must provide their own film and paper. Darkroom chemistry and access to digital editing and printing workstations are provided.

Tuition and Fees: MIT Undergraduate & Graduate Students $130 | MIT Faculty, Staff, & Other Affiliates $250 | Materials Fee: $35
