Printmaking is an artistic discipline whereby images are transferred from a matrix and printed onto another surface, such as paper, wood, and fabrics. This introductory class in printmaking will introduce students to the concepts and processes behind this image transfer technique and how it can be used to explore artistic concepts and concerns. Students will gain a deep understanding of two types of printmaking techniques – drypoint etching and block printing – and will explore topics such as pattern design, how to use an etching press, multi-color prints, and working in repetition and series. Taking the knowledge learned, students will be able to print images towards the end of the term of their own designs.
Materials List:
- Speedy-Cut Carving Block (2.75″ x 4.5″)
- 4x Grey Linoleum Printing Blocks (6″ x 8″)
- Linoleum Cutter Set, Handle with 5 cutters
- Palette Paper
- Richeson Clear Carve Etching Plate, Pkg of 3 (8″ x 10″)
- Double-Point Scribe (preferred) or Carbide Point Scribe
- Cheesecloth
- Strathmore 400 Series Printmaking Paper, Pad of 15 sheets (11″ x 14″)
- Students may wish to purchase additional surfaces to print on towards the end of the term; these may include canvas tote bags, blank cards, or wooden surfaces
Course material fee of $20 covers: brayer, baren, palette knife, printing ink
