This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals and processes of oil painting. Through a series of exercises and individually-led projects of interest, students will address the conceptual problems that will allow them to develop an understanding of the power of images in conveying ideas and modes of expression. Students will be exposed to the principles of color theory, mark-making, and textural applications that will provide them with the tools to navigate their own methods of exploration and investigation of the medium. Although this class is an introduction to oil painting, previous familiarity with observational drawing and basic drawing techniques is recommended as painting builds up on concepts in drawing.

MATERIALS:

  • Walnut Oil
  • Small glass jar with lid
  • Brushes (choose a selection of different sizes and tips – brush handles should be more than 8 inches long – get a combination of soft and hard bristle brushes)
  • 3-inch wide flat Hake brush
  • Metal palette knife
  • Glass palette (or an acrylic palette 12 x 16”) – glass palettes strongly preferred; most hardware stores (including Home Depot) will sell small sheets of glass. Make sure to get one that is at least a ¼” thick; if not, you can always duct tape the palette to a hard sheet of cardboard. Sand the edges if the glass is freshly cut to prevent injuries.
  • Palette scraper (if using glass palette only)
  • Rag cloths (old/throwaway cotton shirts are great for this purpose)
  • Paints: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red Deep, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Pthalo Green (or alternatively Hooker’s Green), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Prussian Blue
  • Support: 2 canvases sized approximately 14 x 16 (as the class progresses students will purchase more canvases at special sizes suited to fit their project)

Materials can be purchased at Artist & Craftsman Supply and Blick Art, both in Central Square.
