Over four weeks, students will work on a painting within the genre of human portraiture and will be taught the tools to express themselves through the medium of oil paint. This class is not intended to be an introduction to oil painting, and it is expected that students enter the class already familiar with the process of painting and working with oil paint as a medium. The first class will introduce concepts in color theory, color bias, color mixing and underpainting, and subsequent weeks will involve students painting a portrait of their choosing from reference photographs.

*Materials fee covers the cost of all consumables such as paint, cleaning agents and rags; for this class students are responsible for bringing to class a 16” x 20” or 18” x 24” canvas as well as a sufficient variety of brushes. Please check materials list for information on types of brushes. Fee includes a $50 glass palette deposit, which is returned following receipt of a cleaned glass palette at the end of the semester.

Tuition and Fees:
MIT Undergraduate + Graduate Students $120 | MIT Faculty, Staff, Spouses, Alumni $180 | Materials Fee: $80
