This advanced studio course will challenge students to become technically fluent in the processes and methodologies of their choice in drawing or painting, while they explore topics that they are personally interested in. It is preferred, though not necessary, if students come into this class with ideas for projects, or a series of works, that they are interested in having the space and guidance to complete. Emphasis will be placed on furthering each student’s existing skill set and challenging them to think and work beyond what they are comfortable with. Students will work independently in addressing their topics of interest while building upon their skills – formally, conceptually and stylistically. The classes are designed to be collaborative; students will have the opportunity to learn from one another in a dynamic studio setting.

Because of the fast-paced nature of this class, students will be expected to have prior experience in drawing or painting, including familiarity with representational drawing (whether that was acquired through taking an introductory drawing or painting class, or from personal practice). Students concerned about whether or not this class would be a good fit for them should reach out to the instructor at timmylee@mit.edu before enrolling, with images of any works they have previously done.

18 X 24 Newsprint paper
18 X 24 Bristol paper
Vine Charcoal
Compressed Charcoal (Please try to get General’s or Faber-Castell)
White Conte Crayon
Black Conte Crayon
White Mars Plastic Eraser
3-inch wide flat Hake brush
Mod Podge (Matte finish preferred)
Students may be required to purchase additional materials as the term progresses based on their needs and interests in exploring drawing from a mixed-media lens
Small sketchbook for daily use (recommended)

Walnut Oil
Small glass jar with lid
Brushes (choose a selection of different sizes and tips – brush handles should be more than 8 inches long – get a combination of soft and hard bristle brushes)
3-inch wide flat Hake brush
Metal palette knife
Glass palette (approx. 12 x 16”) – most hardware stores (including Home Depot) will sell small sheets of glass. Make sure to get one that is at least a ¼” thick; if not, you can always duct tape the palette to a hard sheet of cardboard. Sand the edges if the glass is freshly cut to prevent injuries.
Palette scraper (if using glass palette only)
Rag cloths (old/throwaway cotton shirts are great for this purpose)
Paints: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red Deep, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Pthalo Green (or alternatively Hooker’s Green), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Prussian Blue
Support: Please bring one 18″ x 24″ canvas to the first class; subsequent supports can be purchased as the term progresses based on student’s needs.

Materials can be purchased at Artist & Craftsman Supply and Blick Art, both in Central Square.
