Charcoal Drawing of the interior of MIT Lobby 7. Credit: Mingrou Xie.

This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals and processes of drawing. Students will engage with, and explore, a plethora of drawing methodologies such as mark-making, layering, additive/subtractive drawing, and the articulation of line, value, shape, volume, weight, gesture, and composition. The first four weeks are dedicated to small-scale observational studies to begin developing formal and technical skills, which will be applied in the remainder of the class through larger, more complex drawings. Through exercises that are grounded in observation and realistic rendering, students will gain technical skills, confidence, and a critical eye for representing various subject matters and concepts.

The materials list for this class is linked below. Note: students do NOT have to get Bristol paper (only newsprint) or conte crayons.
