The Schnitzer Prize was established in 1996 by the Student Art Association through an endowment from Harold and Arlene Schnitzer of Portland, Oregon. Schnitzer, a real estate investor, graduated from MIT in 1944 with a degree in metallurgy.

The Wiesner Student Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Stratton Student Center and is open 24 hours a day and open to the general public.

All currently registered MIT students are eligible to apply for the Schnitzer Prize.  Deadlines for the 2013 competition have not been set.

On Monday, April 2 2012, applicants should submit a completed application form and high quality digital images.

  1. Samples of work:
  • Images of 3 pieces (sculpture, ceramics, glass, painting, photography, etc.) that well represent your entire body of work, or 3 excerpts no longer than 3 minutes each from film / video work

2.   A written statement concerting the artist’s intent as it pertains to his or her works and art in general (limit of 400 words)

Please send highest quality possible images to sammagee@mit.edu. Upon review, you will be invited to join a shared public folder to submit larger files if needed.

Judging

A panel from the Student Art Association, Council for the Arts at MIT, and the MIT visual arts community will judge the artist’s overall artistic talents and creative concept.

Prizes and Exhibition

Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in the competition. Honorable mentions may also be awarded. Winners must be willing and able to display their work in the Wiesner Student Art Gallery in the spring of 2011. This includes installation and deinstallation of the work.
