Suzanne Bocanegra
Suzanne Bocanegra’s visual art draws upon sound and movement as she coaxes new meanings from the intersections of these modalities.
About the Performance
In Spring 2013, Suzanne Bocanegra presented a lecture/demonstration for the class “Music and Technology” taught by Evan Ziporyn, Faculty Director of the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology. Over the course of the semester, Ziporyn brought twenty prominent sound and multimedia artists to campus for lectures, demonstrations, workshops and performances open to both students and the general public alike.
The 2013 Spring Sound Series series laid the groundwork for MIT Sounding, an innovative annual performance series that blurs the boundaries between contemporary and world music founded by Evan Ziporyn in 2014.
The 2013 MIT Spring Sound Series is presented by the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) and MIT Music and Theater Arts.

Biography
Suzanne Bocanegra’s visual work involves large-scale performance and installation, frequently translating two dimensional information, images and ideas from the past into three dimensional scenarios for staging, movement, ballet and music. From an ancient Danish text fragments to Jan Bruegel the Elder’s 17th century renderings of flowers, manifold historical, creative and material sources are employed “not just as templates for another static work of art, but as a script, a musical score, or an instruction for how to move, or how to behave.”
Suzanne Bocanegra lives and works in New York City. Her piece “When a Priest Marries a Witch, an Artist Talk by Suzanne Bocanegra Starring Paul Lazar” premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC in 2010. Her other work has been shown in the Serpentine Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Armand Hammer Museum.
